Are Printed Books Dying or Not?
It’s Futurists Versus Consumers As The Death Of The Book Is Prophesied:
- Interesting. I think printed books are dying. Slowly.
What do you think?
Negroponte’s recent remarks at Techonomy concerning the death of printed books have the usual amount of wiggle room in them — which is not to say that they’re false, only that they’re an example of the usual futurist prestidigitation.
The death of printed books (and, by extension, magazines and such) is, of course, merely an ongoing process — a given. What is in the air is the timing. Negroponte says not ten years, but five. Either he has more faith than I do in consumers’ plasticity, or he’s talking about something completely different.
It’s pure speculation, on both our parts, though admittedly he has shipped millions of devices and is working hard at changing the world, and I’m still trying to get the hang of boiling an egg. So there’s something of an expertise gap, but as you pile years onto your estimates, that gap becomes increasingly irrelevant. Paul and I talked about this in regards to the so-called Singularity Movement, which plans for the unplannable — nobly, perhaps, but in my opinion futilely.
So Negroponte thinks that the e-book will kill the physical book within five years. Maybe kill isn’t the right word — printed books aren’t being eradicated. But clearly he thinks that five years from now the battle will be decided. I’d consider e-books selling more than print books (not just hardbacks), with e-book sales going up and physical book sales going down as “victory conditions.” And when I put it like that, it starts sounding a lot more reasonable (I can be very convincing).
In effect, Negroponte posits (and he is not the only one) that the raw information comprised by books will soon be more important and accessible than books themselves. That’s inevitable, as printed books were only ever containers, but they remain effective and popular containers, and I think they still have a lot of life left in them — more than five years, anyway. The age of print is coming to an end, but those of us writing excitedly about it are the only ones in a hurry.

A Leaked Photo of HTC Desire HD - Android phone with 4.3-inch screen

The HTC Ace was recently spotted as on a Vodafone Germany inventory and there was more news too - it was going to be called the HTC Desire HD.
This leaked image has now appeared on uwants.com and it instantly seems similar in looks and specs to the Windows Mobile-powered HTC HD2. A 4.3" WVGA touch screen is rumoured, a 1Ghz CPU, 720P video recording, 4GB of on-board storage, an 8 megapixel camera and a Android 2.2.
This should, according to the rumours, arrive in Europe in October.Read more at www.coolsmartphone.com

Push for More Consistency
It’s the small things that add up. For us, one of the most annoying things is the fact that if you make a spelling mistake while searching for an app in Android Market, Android doesn’t correct you.
For Andy Castonguay, Director of Mobile Device Research for the Yankee Group, it’s the fact that on certain devices, the accelerometer only works if you tilt the phone to the left. What makes it worse, he says, is that the Android experience is even inconsistent across manufacturers, as each phone maker layers their own interface on top (think HTC Sense and Motorola’s Motoblur) as a way of making their Android phones stand out. And these extra layers, of course, make it especially hard to update a phone to the latest version of Android, creating an even larger disparity between what Android phones can and can’t do.
“The great thing for the manufacturers is they can create that brand affinity with the consumer on the back of Android, instead of having Android be front and center,” Castonguay said. “That results in idiosyncracies and discrepancies.”
Google can’t wean itself off these skins entirely, lest it alienate the very OEMs that have made Android so ubiquitous. But Google can, and will have to, work harder to develop more and better widgets, so that it’s not up to the likes of HTC and Motorola to decide what information you can see at glance, and what you can’t.
“HTC and Motorola have adapted to reflect consumer needs in a very positive way. Android as a platform will need to adopt some of those characteristics,” said Castonguay.

iOS 4 Beta 3 Offers Email-Based FaceTime Support:

Now, it has been discovered that the iOS 4 Beta 3, which was made available on Tuesday to registered developers, offers email-based FaceTime support. Users are allowed to choose between a phone number or an email address to make FaceTime calls, as pictured above.
Now, considering that Apple mobile devices such as the iPod Touch and iPad are not assigned phone numbers for obvious reasons, it makes sense to make FaceTime calls available using just an email address. The most important fact here is that it’s looking very likely that the next generation iPod Touch will indeed be equipped with front-facing cameras.
Apple usually introduces new iPod and iPod Touch models in September at its annual media event in San Francisco, California. However, a rumor today suggest that the company will hold the even in mid-August. More specifically around August 16.

Apple opens Try Before You Buy section in App Store
I think this will be great. Not because apps are so expensive, but it is always better to be able to try an app before you buy it. There is many apps in app store that I would like to try if I like before buying. I bought Pulse yesterday and I didn't like it for example..

Apple seems to be adding to and changing up their App Store's featured sections quite frequently. Today Apple added a new section dedicated to promoting free applications on the App Store. One of the subsections of this new feature is "Try Before You Buy." This section features many of the popular "free" or "lite" editions of apps, but the section title is what makes this all interesting.
There is a common phrase going around when it comes to app piracy, and that is "trying before buying." Many people claim they pirate apps to do just that and claim Apple does not offer app trials. Well, Apple and others feel that's false due to the multitude of "lite" editions on the App Store. Apple pushes that belief with this new section as they are promoting "trying before buying" without pirating.

The iPhone/iPad App Pulse Teams With Posterous and launches PulseMeme
Pulse Teams With Posterous:
- Interesting. Posterous grows with the help of the popular Pulse News reader for iPhone and iPad.
Can someone tell me though how this is different from sending the posts to your own Posterous blog from for example Google Reader?
Or clipping a page with the Amplify bookmarklet and post it to your Amplify blog?
Find more info about the Pulse News Reader here:
http://kb.clipotech.com/pulse
Read post:
The Pulse News app just got better. Creator Alphonso Labs has recently teamed up with Posterous to create a simple way for users to create their own “Pulses.” Best of all, the service is free.
If you find an article within Pulse News that you feel others will enjoy, click on the heart-shaped icon. From there, simply log in and the post is sent to a free site hosted by Posterous. The first time you do this, a username and email address must be added. Then, your free Pulse site is alive and well for others to see.
Friends without Pulse (or Posterous) can review your post simply by going to a website address. The website address will include the username you originally selected followed by pulsememe.com/. For example, my site is located at http://newworld71.pulsememe.com/.
Users with Pulse can easily subscribe to your “Pulses”, simply by looking up your name or username.
Another aspect of the Pulse/Posterous endeavor is this: Pulsememe. As users are adding Pulses, this site determines which posts are “hot” and highlights them on the site.
This service is brand new, and as such, isn’t being used by a lot of people yet. Still, the concept looks promising and pushes the Pulse News app (again) to the head of the newsreader class.

About a month ago, we (pre) announced a feature called Community Likes. Since then, there’s been a couple hundred early adopting communities testing this feature out (thank you!) and a few hundred thousand likes given. Today, this feature is going live on all sites using Disqus.
This feature continues Disqus’ goal to help pull a true community out of the audience that visits your site. Liking comments has been a core piece of Disqus since the beginning, and we’re now extending this feedback mechanism to the top-level page or article itself. Community Likes is an easy, quick way for your visitors to give feedback and make their presence known on your site, all without having to post an actual comment.
Community Likes also functions as a slick way for people to share the article on Facebook and Twitter (only if they give it a thumbs up — but don’t worry, we’ve been seeing over 90% likes over dislikes). That means that liking content with Disqus’ buttons taps into the power of both Facebook’s and Twitter’s social networks.

Twitter Might Put Your Account On Notice - can help the Twitter spam
Look Out, Twitter Might Put Your Account On Notice:
- Ok. If this can help with the Twitter Spam it's fine by me.
Found via this tweet:
http://twitter.com/pingmicro/status/20373391806
Read post:
Practically the only time you see the service's support team pop up is if an account is disabled. It's possible a new process is being put in place to provide a warning to users who have stepped out of line, putting them "on notice". A new account, called @twitteronnotice, says cryptically "You're On Notice!", featuring an avatar of Uncle Sam glaringly pointing his finger in your direction. The account even calls itself "Minus One", a common Internet tally for somebody or something being modded down by the community. (e.g. +1 and -1)
Get enough negative karma associated with your account, and you might see your account go on notice. While no public details are yet available for this private account, it could be a way for the company to try and avoid user attrition through aggressive account deletions, and put accounts in something of a holding pattern for violating the terms of service.Read more at blog.louisgray.com

We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.
Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance technology and the wider web.Read more at googleblog.blogspot.com

The better looking TweetAlarm and Twilert services offer a more casual alert experience, but with general keyword alert options, they could prove more useful for more advanced Twitter monitoring.

After copying Tumblr’s reblog feature earlier, it looks as if Automattic (the company behind WordPress) is copying yet another feature from the microblogging service.
Starting today you’ll notice a new feature at the bottom of all WordPress.com blog posts. We’ve enabled a “Like” button, which, when clicked, shows a Gravatar image for all the bloggers who like a post.
When you “like” a post two core things happen. First, the blog post’s author sees your “like” and can click-through to your Gravatar profile. Second, clicking “like” saves the post in your homepage dashboard (in the “Posts I Like” section), so you can share it with others, or just keep it around for future reference. (Official WordPress Blog)
Currently the only difference between WordPress’s like feature and Tumblr’s is the fact that the former uses a star as an icon while the latter uses a heart symbol.

Mining for Gold in Blog Comments:

I really love Amplify! The blog engine of the future!
Two different blog posts – Arik’s (as the title suggests) is about blog comments, while Gini’s is about platforms like Foursquare and Gowalla and acts as a rebuttal to a recent Forrester report.
Yet despite being different, they’re both very much tied together by one defining factor – blog comments.
You see, what both blog posts confirmed is something I believe in wholeheartedly – it’s not the blog that offers the most bang for your buck, but the comments that follow once published.

Well then…this is interesting. If you’re an iDisk user, there’s a little setting that you will want to check out. While iDisk obviously offers you the ability to have access to your files via your iPhone or iPod Touch, the latest update apparently has another option you’ll want to check:
“Play audio from your iDisk while using another app”
The option, buried deep into the “more” button features in the newest version of iDisk, is not exactly an iTunes in the Cloud replacement, but it certainly comes close. All you have to do is toss your music onto your iDisk and you can stream it wherever you are.
While 20 GB isn’t nearly enough for some users, it should cover a good part of others. It’s also a great option if you only have a few new things that you want to listen to, and change out your music often.
