Bonnier Group Selects Adobe Digital Publishing Suite for Newspaper Tablet Editions

I got this press-release in my inbox today and thought it was interesting enough to share with you:

Major Newspaper Publisher Uses Adobe Creative Suite 5 and Digital Publishing Suite to Create and Produce Innovative Tablet Newspaper Editions with Distinctive Look and Features

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Dec. 7, 2010 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that the Bonnier international publishing group has selected the Adobe® Digital Publishing Suite for its development of the tablet newspaper publishing platform, News Plus. Bonnier’s News Plus platform will be used to create tablet editions of leading Bonnier Group news magazines with a total daily print circulation of more than 800,000. The first News Plus based edition expected to enter daily production is Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, which launched its Apple iPad News Plus app in the Apple App Store yesterday.

Following Dagens Nyheter, Bonnier plans to launch four additional dailies on their News Plus platform, including Sydsvenskan, Expressen, Dagens Industri and Børsen. Built using the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, the Bonnier news magazine initiates a dialogue with readers, while staying on top of a 24-hour content cycle. Beginning with Dagens Nyheter, Bonnier is making innovative use of the Web View functionality in the Adobe Content Viewer to display and push HTML5 content to readers as it happens throughout the day. In addition, the company has implemented a publisher direct model for subscription payments and scheduled content distribution using the Digital Publishing Suite.

“Adobe Digital Publishing Suite has been a key element in the development of our News Plus platform,” said Tore Fjaertoft, chief technology officer, Bonnier Digital. “We were challenged to efficiently and quickly create novel reading experiences that map to our business goals. The innovative Adobe Digital Publishing Suite enables us to design and produce a daily newspaper application within a very rigorous and fast paced production cycle while supporting our subscription based business model.”

The Dagens Nyheter tablet edition features slideshows, video and what is called a Live Layer. The Live Layer takes advantage of the Web View overlay to stream live feeds of breaking and updated stories throughout the day. The Live Layer includes rich content, such as video. The application also makes use of CSS3 to render fonts for more sophisticated typography providing a rich reading experience. Over the coming months, Dagens Nyheter will use the Digital Publishing Suite to add more features which will enable tablet readers to communicate with individual editors and writers.

“Innovative news magazine publishers like Bonnier, who want to extend their offerings to tablets and other digital devices – leveraging existing staff and established workflows – know they can depend on Adobe to help them make this crucial transition,” said David Wadhwani, senior vice president and general manager, Creative and Interactive Solutions, Adobe. “Across the globe, citizens rely on newspapers to hold a mirror to the world and at Adobe we believe our technology will preserve and enhance the crucial role that journalism plays in our culture, as new digital platforms emerge.”

About Adobe Digital Publishing Suite

The Adobe Digital Publishing Suite provides professional publishers a set of turnkey hosted services, tools and viewer technology to create, publish and sell digital content directly, through content aggregator partners or leading mobile marketplaces. Built on the foundation of Adobe Creative Suite® and Adobe InDesign® CS5, the Digital Publishing Suite enables the design and delivery of innovative publisher-branded reading experiences, paired with flexible commerce models and deep analytics reporting. Additions to Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite tools include a new Overlay Creator Panel, Content Viewer, Content Bundler and Digital Publishing Plug-in for InDesign CS5 that speed the delivery of digital editions on the desktop or tablet devices.

Motorola Motopad w/ Android 3.0 Spotted [PHOTOS]

Still no android tablet specific apps though...

Amplify’d from techcrunch.com
Andy Rubin is, as I type this, in the middle of a demo of Android 3.0 (AKA Honeycomb) at Dive Into Mobile.
The software is running on a prototype MOTOPAD that looks really slick, though it was only out for a moment and there are but few pictures at the moment.
First thing he showed off was a new lock screen and then what appeared to be a brand new “desktop” with widgets and buttons in the corners. Different UI aesthetic than earlier versions of Android. He then launched the new, 3D-and-vector-based version of Google Maps that should be coming to your phone in just a couple days.
Honeycomb will be out “next year,” which is a pretty vague deadline, but if I remember correctly, we’ve heard Q2 for the Moto tablet.
Another improvement he notes is the ability to split applications into multiple “fragments,” i.e. a mail app would have two panes for mail and inbox, which would be viewed sequentially on a phone but simultaneously on a tablet. There’s a new app grid and Gmail appears to have gotten a much nicer version of itself, which I would bet money is a lot like what they’re going to show off tomorrow at their Chrome thing.

The tablet itself looks to me to be larger than the 7″ we heard a while back, but it’s really difficult to tell without actually being there. I’d guess 9″ at 16:10 from these pictures. I don’t know how big Andy Rubin actually is, so my frame of reference is a bit off.

I’ve always said the Android versions we’ve had are a bad fit for tablets. This looks like a different story. I’m looking forward to Honeycomb.

Nexus S

Google has made its second bid for a slice of the mobile phone market, with the launch of its Nexus S phone.

The Samsung-built device comes less than 12 months after the launch of the firm's Nexus One, built by HTC, which failed to win over many consumers.

The Nexus S will initially be launched in the UK and US, and will be available "from the end of the month".

It is the first phone to feature the latest version of Google's Android operating system known as Gingerbread.

The Nexus S was first shown off by Google boss Eric Schmidt at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco in November.

The 16GB, touchscreen device has been built in cooperation with Samsung and is part of its Galaxy S family of phones and tablets.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt holds up his Google phone as he speaks at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco

In the UK, the Nexus S will come free with £35 per month contracts or will be offered unlocked - to be used on any carrier - for £549.

The Google blog said it would be available after 16 December in the US and 20 December in the UK.

However, a spokesperson for Carphone Warehouse said that it would take pre-orders from 1600 GMT today, but it would not be on sale "until later in the month".

My first experience with my new iPad & why I think it could replace laptops

My first experience with my new iPad & why I think it can replace laptops.

I've been using my new iPad since I got last Friday and I must say that it can really replace computers for most of the people. Including me.

My girlfriend will definitely manage everything she do on a computer from an iPad. So she want one too :)

Not everyone needs a computers full power.

The only Flash sites that I use has apps that replace them. For example Google Analytics.

All other sites that I need to load in full (for example my Internet Bank), I use web browsers like iCab Mobile or Atomic web browser. These browsers can simulate a desktop web browsers so that the site thinks you surfing from a desktop computer. Works great. Fast too.

Thanks to awesome apps like Textexpander and blogpress I can blog easy and fast in real HTML, with links, pictures and formatted text. As easy as it is on a computer.

I played my first iOS game yesterday. Actually it was a iPhone game (Crystal War) but it looked nice scaled up with the 2X button. So I guess the iPad is an excellent gaming machine too.

The size of the iPad is perfect. Not too small and not too big. I definitely not won't a 7-inch iPad. I don't think it's too heavy either that some users complaining about. Maybe it depends on how we hold it?

The only thing I am not satisfied with is that not many apps supports multi-tasking and fast app switching yet. But that will come soon as it did on the iPhone.

Another thing is that I had too few universal apps so I have to buy many apps again and they are more expensive on the iPad. That is too bad.

Overall I am completely satisfied and it will not be many times that I will use my really expensive MacBook pro anymore. In fact I could have bought iPads to the whole family for the same price as my MacBook pro....

See Traffic Data Right Inside Your Page Content: Google Introduces In-Page Analytics

How do visitors navigate your pages? If you are thinking about the Site Overlay feature available since a long time in Analytics, think again. Here is a new very powerful feature from Google which can give you great insight and understanding on how and where you can improve your website design.

Looks very useful!

Amplify’d from analytics.blogspot.com
Introducing In-Page Analytics: Visual context for your Analytics data
When looking at Google Analytics reports, sometimes it’s difficult to visualize how visitors navigate on a given website page. To make this visualization easier, some users keep the website open in another browser tab so they can reference it while looking through reports. Others rely on the Site Overlay report in Google Analytics, which, admittedly, hasn’t worked as well it could.
Today, we’re happy to share with you a bit of what we’ve been working on to address this problem. We’re releasing a new feature into beta: In-Page Analytics. With In-Page Analytics, you can see your Google Analytics data superimposed on your website as you browse.
Take In-Page for a spin and let us know what you think. In-Page Analytics is still in beta, so some things in the report may not work perfectly yet. There’s a lot left to do, but there’s even more that we want to build going forward. In-Page is currently available for all English users of Google Analytics. We also have a demo video that walks you through the feature and how you might use it.
You’ll find the In-Page Analytics report in the Content section in your Google Analytics account, and it replaces Site Overlay. You can read more about In-Page in the Google Analytics Help Center. Let us know what you think and how you’re using it!

5 To-Do List Apps for iPhone That Are Great (and Free!)

I use mail for my GTD.

Amplify’d from mashable.com

5 Fresh and Free To-Do List Apps for iPhone

We all lead busy, hectic lives, which means that it’s all too easy to forget a task here and there. A to-do list can really help keep you on track, but pen and paper lists are easily lost, especially if you are disorganized to begin with.

Making a to-do list on the device you take everywhere — your phone — is a great way to get organized. You can whip it out at any point to add an item, or — joy of joys — cross one off.

We’ve taken a look at the to-do lists in the App Store (App Store) and have come up with five fresh options that will help your productivity in specific ways. Best of all, each one is free.

This list app offers great functionality and is perfect for anyone who needs reminders for recurring tasks. Whether it’s returning library books, de-fleaing the cat, car maintenance or just a nudge to call your grandmother, Lucid Lists helps you set up reminders for repeating tasks.

Tasks are categorized as “raw” denoting a new or far-off task, “ripe,” which means ready for action, or “rotten” if you’ve missed the due date. This system provides an at-a-glance look at what needs doing and should help anyone stay on track of regular chores.

This functional app offers a calendar-based way to manage your tasks and alerts to make sure you remember to do them. Add a new item to your to-do list and you can set up folders, priority levels, due date and due time. Setting a due time means you can accompany the task with an alert to go off at various timed intervals before it’s due.

You can also view monthly calendars that show tasks due on different dates, which is a great way of getting an overview of just what it is your to-do list has in store for you.

Ideal for anyone who has a very busy home and work life, this app separates the two areas, offering a micro-managed way of keeping on top of all your tasks, as well as personal projects and study.

Within the “work”, “home,” “project,” “school” and “personal” sections, you can add to-do items and other tasks into a plethora of sub-sections such as appointments, documents, events, yard work, etc. There’s even a “to-think” category, if you’re so busy you need to remind yourself to do so.

Listable is a very capable option for anyone who shares to-do lists with partners, housemates or colleagues. Once you’ve set up a list, you can share it via an e-mail invite. The new collaborator can then view the list on his or her iPhone, or online if they are iPhone deficient.

The lists themselves are simple — you create tasks as text entries and then tick them off or delete them once complete. The app also offers an “activity stream” view, so if you have shared lists with others, there’s an at-a-glance way to view who has done what, and when.

The developer describes this app as the “ultimate list making toolkit,” and with its free price tag, we’d definitely agree. ListPro is a seriously comprehensive app that lets you create any kind of to-do list, from simple checklists right through to custom lists as complex as you care to create.

It’s not just the creation options that are complex — the options within the lists leave no stone unturned. Within to-do lists you can highlight, indent, and add categories, priority ratings, flags and more. Once you’ve created your lists, you can then re-arrange items, filter results and send an e-mail reminder.

We’re just touching the surface of what this app is capable of. If you’re a die-hard to-do list fan, or want to try and become one, this app comes highly recommended.

Dejumble: A Powerful Little Menu Bar Task Manager

We’re all busy people. Probably busier than we would like. There’s a lot going on, coming at us from all different directions. We have multiple projects and tasks going on at the same time, and sooner or later, there will come a time when you’ll need to find a solid method to keep everything in order.

Luckily for us, there’s an abundance of task management theory and methodology available—and also a lot of associated software software to choose from. Dejumble is one such task manager, and we’ll be taking it for a spin today.

First worth mentioning is that Dejumble is a Menu Bar app. This is slight step away from tradition for this type of app, but it makes a welcome change. It seems to remind you that managing tasks is an aside to the real work you’re meant to be doing in dedicated windows.

The core parts of Dejumble are tabs directly below the search bar. The tabs are labeled Inbox, Projects, and Search. These are not customizable. You’ll spend a majority of your time on the Projects tab. This is where all of the actual project and task management happens.

Search

Dejumble uses the common project and task structure for the core organization method. Projects are created with tasks and sub tasks created within those projects. There is quite a bit of functionality in this area so I’ll just run through some of the capabilities.

Projects View

While on the Projects tab you’ll see your projects as tabs along the left hand side of the application window. The active project will display as a lighter color and you’ll see all of the tasks associated with that project to the right in the main application window.

New Task Form
Edit Task Form

Here is where Dejumble starts to really stand out. As you’d expect, when you create a task you must assign it to a project. On top of this, there are also some other less obvious things you can add to the task title help you better organize the tasks. I say “less obvious” because it did take a little research to figure out some of this functionality.

You can also prioritize each task by including a ! followed by a number (1-9). So if you wanted to make something a 5 priority you’d include !5 in the title. The priorities will display in different colors. Green for the lower, yellow for the middle and red for the high priority. These can also be clicked on to use as filters in the same way as the tags.

Subtask View

All of these functions are great, but they are a little tricky to figure out at first. I’m undecided on whether I like accomplishing these items in this manner, or if it would make more sense for it to be more obvious (i.e. choose a priority from a list, or a separate function to add sub tasks, etc.)

Smart Groups
Smart Bar Quick Task

One of the big features of Dejumble is that it can be paired with an iPhone application, or with other computers with Dejumble installed.

Dejumble is still in beta so, as of now, is a free download. There is an option right now to pre-order for $20.00 which they say is almost half off what the regular price will be ($39.00). The companion iPhone app is $4.99.

Overall, I’ll say that I think Dejumble is a good task manager. I’m not going to say “great”, primarily due to the moderate learning curve. I’m a bit of a geek and can usually figure out new software relatively quickly, but Dejumble had me stumbling around at first. I think that could turn a lot of people off from the get go.

If you’re in the market for a task manager I’d say Dejumble is certainly worth checking out. Just make sure you spend a little time getting to know the advanced features so you can really use it to its full potential.
