5 alternative blog services that I like and use

I use both Blogger and WordPress for many of my blogs, but I also use other great blog services. Sometimes I think they are even better.

tumblr is great service for posting quotes, photos, links and much more really easy with their bookmarklet. It goes fast and everything get’s stored on their servers. If you want you can do “real” and long blog posts too.
You can use your own domain with this service. Perfectly done.

One problem with tumblr is that It’s not so well indexed by Google, so you will not get much traffic via Google search results.

tmpAF83

storytlr is a relatively new service with a focus on lifestreaming, but you can blog manually too. The developers are working on a bookmarklet just like tumblrs, so you also can post everything you like from the web easily. One feature that storytlr have that the others don’t have is the creation of stories. A story is a collection on links, pictures and text from a specific event, topic or service. A bit buggy, but cool.

You can have you own domain with this service, but It’s still buggy. Wrong domain in the RSS feed for example, and both domains indexed by Google. Not good.

posterous

posterous is one of my absolute favorites. It is so easy to post something to a posterous blog. Preferably be email. Everything you post by mail to your special email address: links, photos, MP3’s, blog posts, documents and much more are automatically published to your posterous blog. All media stored on their servers. Email blogging is both easy and a brilliant idea. It’s possible to blog in a normal way directly from the site too.

You can also create group blogs where your friends and family can post in stuff too.

All that you post can also be posted on many different services like Twitter, Flickr, Blogger and much more if you want.

The posterous service gets better and better all the time, and I really hope that they will have a great year and more people will discover their simple but great service.

chi.mp

chi.mp is a new service that still is invite only. It’s a lifestreaming service only. At least for now. Very simple. They don’t even have RSS feeds or permalinks to the posts!
Very buggy too. I’ve tried to remove one of my feeds from the service for example, but I have not been successful yet..

The service can definitely be improved.

They have one cool feature though, you get you own .mp domain directly when you register. Great.

They will probably add more features over time.

Swurl

Swurl is another great lifestreaming service.
It has RSS feeds and permalinks to the entries.
Great support for many popular services.
You can have your own domain with the service. I haven’t tried it though.
Good use of AJAX on the site.

The service is not evolving as quickly with more features, however.
It has been a long time now with no new features.
